A Guide
to
Menlo Park
in Silicon Valley

near that favorite
city by the Bay,
San Francisco

History

Ohlone Indians, called coast-dwellers
by the Spaniards, occupied the land
that is now the City of Menlo Park.

Spanish rule came to this area in 1769
when Don Gaspar de Portola camped
near "El Palo Alto" after discovery of
San Francisco Bay. Colonizing began
after Juan Bautista DeAnza passed
through on way to establishing Mission
Dolores and the Presidio of
San Francisco in 1776.

In 1854 Menlo Park received its official name when two Irishmen,
Dennis J. Oliver & D. C. McGlynn, whose wives were sisters,
purchased 640-1,700 acres bordering a road, now El Camino Real.

They built two houses with a common entrance & erected a hugh
wooden gate with tall arches on which the name of their estate
was printed in foot-high letters "MENLO PARK", August 1854.
When the railroad came through in 1863, this station had no name.
A railroad official looked over at the gates & the name was
officially adopted. This station is now California State
Landmark No. 955, the oldest station in continuous operation.
